"Your State College Connection"
Shirley Hsi has always been in business. After graduating from college, she worked as a clothing sales person and her clients were from the United States, Canada, and some European countries. Later, she became a merchandiser buying clothing for a Dutch company. In all of her professional life she has been negotiating -- whether with buyers or sellers. When she stumbled onto real estate, she found the negotiation in real estate transactions to be more diplomatic. In order to achieve the goal for her clients, she needed to create a win-win situation.
Shirley was born a red-color personality, but after honing her skills for the past 30 plus years in the real estate business, she has become a combination of red, yellow, green -- or whatever she needs to be for each different situation. Of this Shirley says, "I can either be fierceful or empathetic for my clients in order to get the job done."
As mentioned above, Shirley was in the clothing business, but when her family moved to State College in 1983 following her husband's transfer here by Corning, she found the real estate profession to the best choice for her at that time. It proved to be the right choice. It has been rewarding and fulfilling, and Shirley still has a good time enjoying her profession after 33 years and going.
After moving here, Shirley grew up with State College from 1983. She watched it recover from the 1979 recession, with new development and new construction beginning to flourish from 1983. "1988 was a hot market," said Hsi, "buyers were paying more than asking price and banks were busy refinancing while the interest rate was 9.75%, coming down gradually from 18% in 1980. There have been more ups and downs in the economy since then and I'm glad that I'm able to take advantage of all of those experiences to help my clients - whether they're buying or selling real estate."
Over the years, State College has grown into a small metropolitan area all by itself. Hsi said she's very happy for today's buyers who certainly have more choices between locations and price ranges, and for sellers who also have more buyers brought in by our healthy economy and high local consumer confidence. She believes her knowledge and experiences from the past 30 plus years prove helpful to both buyers and sellers to make their real estate transactions smoother and more efficient.
In 2016, nearly 50% of Shirley Hsi's business came from referrals from past clients or friends, and another 30% from past client repeat business. This is a great testimony to Shirley's service to her clients, of which she wholeheartedly appreciates.

Over the years, Shirley wanted to give back to the beautiful city of State College, that had offered her family a wonderful life. She has done this by volunteering in many different organizations, like Arts Festival, Special Olympics, Nittany Valley Symphony, United Way, and Children's Miracle Network.
State College has proven to be a wonderful place for families with highlights such as high consumer confidence, a safe environment, cultural diversity, tranquil surroundings, and the literary atmosphere brought to us via Penn State University. Shirley pointed out, "At first I thought my family would be here for only 4 years after my husband was transferred here by his employer Corning Glass, but guess what? It has been 34 years and counting. Our children went through the complete education system from Park Forest kindergarten and elementary school, Park Forest middle school, and State College high school. Brian and Chris both graduated from Penn State University, then went on to establish their own rewarding career and wonderful life. One in Tampa, FL and one in Boston, MA. We couldn't be more proud of them. Steven and I are now proud grandparents of 5 grandchildren!"
Life has been good in Happy Valley.
